This unrest is the background to Millet's painting The Gleaners. This is a powerful and timeless statement about the working class. People in the picture do not really pose stiffly, but they move with a realism. During the mid 19th Century Millet’s work was perceived revolutionary and a source of inspiration for the likes of Vincent Van Gough.
The popular painting is a nod to the controversial work of Jean-Francois Millet. Millet painted the image of gleaners working in the fields in the middle 1800s. Gleaners were peasants who were allowed to pick up remnants from the wheat fields after the field owner’s workers finished their work.Millet's particular specialty was peasant life, and he is best known for a series of works highlighting the plight of the peasantry and the harsh physicality of their daily lives. These works include: The Sower (1850), The Gleaners (1857), The Angelus (1857-9) and Man with a Hoe (1862).In one of his most famous works, The Gleaners (1857), women and children bathed in Millet’s characteristic soft, golden light (meant to convey the sanctity of their relationship to the land) collect grain from the fields after harvest.
Unlike Millet, who, in paintings like The Gleaners, was known for depicting hard-working, but idealized peasants, Courbet depicts figures who wear ripped and tattered clothing. And unlike the aerial perspective Millet used in The Gleaners to bring our eye deep into the French countryside during the harvest, the two stone breakers in Courbet.
